Appreciating Others

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. (1 Cor. 12:12)

Every person, every function, and every job is worthy. Unfortunately not everybody sees things this way. There is no unimportant or less honorable job. In order to function, society needs everyone to play his or her part. As the apostle Paul says, “Our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it” (1 Cor. 12:24–26).

The bottom line is this: all parts of the body are important. What would happen if your foot or your hand decided it wasn’t important and wanted instead to become a head? How would your body function with a couple of heads in command? The body needs the head, but it also needs the feet to give balance and the hands to reach for things. The same idea works in a team, a department, or a company. For that reason, we should value and appreciate all people, regardless of their position in society or the company’s hierarchy.

Back in fifteenth-century England, King Richard III, facing the most dreadful battle of his life, stated, “A horse, a horse! My kingdom for a horse!” The quote became popular in the hands of William Shakespeare3 and means that there are moments when even being the king isn’t enough. Sometimes your power and riches simply can’t give you what you need; you need the help of others.

In the board game of life, each piece has its value. Whatever the role a person has to play, it should be applauded. Even if your part is a simple one, be proud of it and do it well.

There are those who don’t move forward because they think less of themselves. They assume they are unable to do anything of value or significance. Each and every one of us, no matter our position, can improve our station in life if we want to. If you feel fulfilled where you are, don’t try to change simply to please society.

The idea is quite simple: value your neighbor and value yourself. Think about every single member of the team. Love your neighbor as you love yourself.
